About Ryan Olson

Feeding a baby monkey at one of my favorite places just outside Kyoto, Japan. Don't worry--the little guy is outside the cage, I'm inside!
Having returned to school to study design after several years working in software development and related fields, my approach to design is inherently multidisciplinary. I view design as an intellectual endeavor that extends far beyond sketching ideas and fabricating objects. I believe that designers should think in terms of complete systems rather than individual artifacts, and I hope that my body of work thus far conveys this philosophy.

After earning my master's degree at SFSU, I stayed on as a lecturer for four semesters while doing some design contracting work. In June 2008 I will begin a position as a Product Design Engineer for Project FROG in San Francisco, where I will work on the design of ecologically sustainable, energy efficient modular prefabricated buildings for schools and other environments. For the long term, I am hoping to find an opportunity that takes my family and me to Japan.
